That’s what happens with champions of a rarefied caliber — they can’t walk away… In the case of decathlon champ Bryan Clay, make that “can’t run away.”

After winning the gold medal in the 2008 Olympic Games, the former Hawaii athlete was so burned out that he took months off from training and competing, which he’d done almost nonstop for more than 10 years leading up to Beijing.

The 29-year-old spent time in his California home with his wife and two young kids and made public appearances and fulfilled commitments to sponsors. “The world’s greatest athlete,” who has helped promote youth fitness here, has continually been a great role model.
