Bryan answers questions from fans

Q: Hey Bryan. It is Jason Moore from Doane College. All of the old NAIA decathletes are wishing you well in 2008. If you had to pick one experience or person in your life that inspires you to push yourself who or what would it be?

A: I would have to say my wife and kids inspire me!

Q: Hi Bryan, My name is Ian Ortiz from Azusa I was one of your wifes students at Paramount School. How is Mrs.Clay and the baby? Do you remember me? Good luck in Bejing, I will be cheering for you. Ian.

A: Hi! I do remember you, and Mrs. Clay does too!! She says “hello!” Thanks so much for writing. Mrs. Clay and the babies (we have 2 now) are great! Thanks for your support!!

Q: How can I support you on Facebook? Do you have a Facebook page?

A: There is a Bryan Clay Fan Club on Facebook, and yes, I do have a page but it is set to private.

Q: Mr clay I am 15 and I want to be just like you. Do you have any tips for me to know how to become a great decathlete.

A: Thank you! Lots of hard work and determination will help you to be a better athlete. Don’t get too down on yourself or give up if things don’t go your way, you have to brush it off, learn from your mistakes and keep trying!

Q: Hey B man, congrats on the us trials. Just wondering what is your height and weight?? thanks, your aussie fan.

A: I am 5’11”, 185lbs.

Q: When you were in high school was the decathlon an event in your school league or did you do it out side of school. Because where I live we have a pentathlon which is 110mhh, long jump, shot putt, high jump, 1500m all in 1 day.

A: No, the decathlon was not an event. I just did several events at each track meet. I did not start the dec until I was in college.

Q: What length and cm poles do you prefer for the vault?

A: 5 meter poles

Q: Hey just wondering who your coach is?

A: Kevin Reid, Mike Barnett, Paul Doyle, Rana Reider.

Q: Hi bryan, I’d like to know your suggestion about a 19 years old decathlet with 1.82cm height and 65kg weight who is worried about his future! I’m asian and my PB is just 6232. what should I do to improve myself? good luck in Bejing.

A: You might want to try to build up a little more muscle, get as strong and as fit as you can. Keep training!

Q: Hey Bryan! This is Rick Koch’s daughter Danielle. I wanted to say congrats and i was wondering how you are feeling going into the olyphmics? cant wait to watch you good luck!!!

A: Thanks! Great to hear from you! I am feeling really good right now, I can’t wait to go and compete.

Q: If the moon were made of barbeque spare ribs, would you eat it?

A: Maybe…..

Q: Hey bryan i am 15 and i wanted to be a decathlete. I am tryin out for the heptahlon at the carifta games and the world youth octathlon. I am 5’7 130 pounds. Do you think I could qualify. how to get better at it

A: I don’t know if you can qualify because I don’t know your marks. Make sure you get in the weight room and keep practicing! Good luck!

Q: Bryan, my weakness is Pole Vaulting! How do you do it?

A: Well, unfortunately I can’t really coach you over the internet. Sorry! My advice is to make sure you are lifting. Pole vault takes a lot of core strength. Also, make sure you have a good coach!

Q: Congratulations on your past achievements and for making this years team! I have to say, you look pretty solid. What’s the most you can bench, curl, and leg press? And how do you remain injury free? It’s hard :)

A: I bench 355lbs. I don’t do curls or leg press so I am not sure about those. As far as being injury free, well, I have definitely had my share of injuries!! Recently I have been able to stay pretty healthy. I think it is due to a better training plan and also learning the importance of listening to my body!

Q: Aloha Bryan I am a student at the Kamehameha Schools and I was wondering if I choose to hurdle, if height is needed? Is it true that only taller people are capable of excelling at hurdling?

A: Well, I am not going to lie to you, being tall does help. But, I am only 5’10 1/2” and I am one of the best decathlete hurdlers!

Yes, I’m interested in updates!

Hey Bryan. Wanted to stop by and say good luck & God bless. You are in my prayers as you honor our Savior by using the gifts He has given you! It was a pleasure to observe you around Baseline while I was living out in LA. You certainly live a life that models your goals of God first, family second, athletics third. Keep on Shining bright!

As a fellow APU alum, it’s obvious that quality people surround you. With Mike Barnett and Dave Reid in the mix, no doubt they’ll keep you loose and relaxed. What’s the biggest disctraction that you expect to encounter again at these games? Stay healthy, and thanks for being a great role model to young athletes.
