Bryan to appear on Wheaties cover

It was officially announced today that Bryan Clay will be the cover athlete for a special commemorative edition of Wheaties cereal. After winning the gold medal, Bryan let his desire be known that he would like to follow in the footsteps of previous US decathlon champions Dan O’Brien, Jim Thorpe and Bruce Jenner as Wheaties champions.

“Having your picture on the Wheaties box is something all athletes strive for,” Clay says. “It’s a mark of distinction that says you’ve reached the pinnacle of your career. This is a very special honor for me.”

US gold medal winning gymnast Nastia Liukin will also be featured on a version of the box. The two commemorative editions will be available in stores in December.

“There were many outstanding performances by American athletes over the past few weeks, and we applaud them for their efforts,” said Wheaties Marketing Manager Joe Driscoll. “Both Nastia and Bryan bring such dedication and commitment to their sports, and we’re so happy to welcome them both into the Wheaties family. They’re both terrific role models and represent the very best of the championship ideals that have made Wheaties ‘The Breakfast of Champions’ for more than 80 years.”

A special thanks also goes out to all the Bryan Clay fans who wrote in to say why they believed Bryan should be the cover athlete. Your words and support truly made a difference.

Bryan,
Congratulations to the greatest athlete in the world and in joining the ranks of the great decathlon champions who preceded you. Good luck with your worthwhile foundation in assisting those who deserve a break and help from society and good luck in your endeavors. Enjoy your success. It was a pleasure watching your excellence during the Olympics.

Hi, I’m a 3-time marathoner and I was just wondering if you thought saying you are a better athlete than Phelps less than a week after the Games was a smart thing, or if you were misquoted or it was taken out of context. You didn’t come off well publicly, the only reason I’m here. Back, breast, fly and free is pretty well-rounded to me and he’s got more gold than Fort Knox. You’re a great athlete. I’m a good one. Phelps was the 2008 Olympics. Keep up the great performances and striving for your dreams.
