Olympic Star Bryan Clay Visits Delbarton

There is never a dull moment at Delbarton School. Here’s proof: On Friday, September 5 Delbarton welcomed the World’s Greatest Athlete, Bryan Clay, winner of the gold medal in the Decathlon at the Beijing Olympics. Bryan and a team shot photos, using Delbarton’s Senior Garden as a backdrop, for a financial services company. Stephen Bienko ’94, Clay’s manager and himself a record-breaking track and field athlete at Delbarton (he still holds the School’s discus record) escorted the world class athlete around campus.

Bryan Clay gave a speech at the GOP convention in Minneapolis the previous night (“I was so nervous”, reported the world’s greatest athlete) and, after his Delbarton appearance, was headed straight to New York City to ring the closing bell of the NY Stock Exchange. After an introduction by Headmaster Br. Paul Diveny OSB Clay spoke briefly to the entire Delbarton student body about his goals and priorities: “God first, my family second, track third.” Faculty members breathed an audible sigh of relief when Clay cautioned the boys to insert “School” between family and sports. Clay then took a few moments to sign autographs and take pictures with some very excited Delbarton students.
